Rainbow Mayor

Untitled
10x12 inches, acrylic on canvas
Came up with this today after yet another gaffe by our Mayor, this one even more stupid and belligerent than the last - which was either slurring his words and speaking gibberish in Vancouver or slurring his words and speaking gibberish at the 3030

RAYGUN! for the Nerd Block Offices

Nerd Block RAYGUNS!
12x12 inches, acrylic on canvas
can be commissioned in any colour
$120.00 each
I originally wanted to do a Han Solo styled blaster for the Nerd Block piece but after a couple of tries I didn't like the size of the clip, which is where I wanted to place the very cool NB logo.
Instead I did two version of the gun, the top piece I kept the idea of the sight from Solo's blaster and the bottom one I wanted to give it the full on RAY GUN! treatment.
If you're not sure what Nerd Block is here's a link
We'll see which one they like best.

Large Abstracts 1-6, WIP

I've started working on two more large abstracts, a 30x30 and another 30x40. I apologize for the photos I need more light coming over my left shoulder to get better pics. I am really enjoying the discovery and process of working on these pieces, I wasn't in a rut with my figurative work and I'm not abandoning it at all, this is just a necessary change. I need to push in a different direction, work some other colours, I also love abstract work, we have a beautiful small Janna Watson in our living room and also a great Robert Chandler piece that I traded with him a bunch of years ago.
It takes a  lot to impress me when I see other figurative work by artists but when I'm in a gallery I spend the most time looking at abstract work, trying to figure out the thought process, technique, how they knew when to stop, why they didn't put a dog in it etc. so this is a great chance for me to answer those questions for myself.
I'm also going to start using some high viscosity acrylics instead of thicker out of the tub acrylic, I think I'll be able to get some better gestural work using a thinner paint (minus all of the drips that come from thinning down tub paint).
I think I'll take tomorrow to work exclusively on the two newest pieces and see how they develop.

Large Abstract #3 WIP

I will also be reconfiguring the lighting in the studio, I need something stronger on my left side so these photos turn up with more definition.

Large Abstract #2 WIP

This is the second piece and the third pass that I've made on it since beginning in the New Year, I really like what is going on with this one.

Large Abstract #1 WIP

Large Abstract #1
30x30inches, acrylic on canvas
I've reconfigured the studio a bit to work on four large (3@ 30x30 and 1@ 30x40) acrylic abstract pieces. I'm building them from the base up developing areas and colours as I see them. I'm trying to capture the sea and waves, the sky and birds. I'm enjoying the process and hope to have some very solid work to show by the spring.
I had originally intended to do some large work in oil but I wanted to get started with acrylic since I'm more comfortable with acrylic and will be adding a lot of gel and product to the paint to get the depth effects that I want, so keep coming back here and watch the work develop.

Oil Paintings and 2014

I've been slow to get started on things since the beginning of the New Year, I started a new blog (that's four) "Smudges and Lines" which will detail my work on comics from drawing, sketching, characters and page design. I'm happy to have begun it, it's time that I improved my drawing and using comic books is the way I'm going to do it. I'll get a link up soon but there isn't much to look at right now.
The two photos above are two large (large for me) 30x40 inch oils that I started awhile back and then left, I just wanted to get used to moving the oil around and chose two photos of trees that I took on a trip back from Ottawa, it's early days for these two pieces but I think creating six large oil paintings will be a big part of my years. I have no idea where these paintings are going, which is a little dangerous when working with oil but I look forward to the challenge of figuring out how to work on a large scale.

Back Down In the Studio

Back in the studio after having to pause for a bit, putting in the boat with lantern and balancing out my light and darks. The "gold band" across the horizon also needs work, but that's no problem.
I should be down at the Cameron House today from 4-7pm or so, if that changes I'll let you know.

Extended at the Cameron House! Still time to buy local!

Hey there folks! Just wanted to share the news that the show at the Cameron House has been extended and the last day is the 9th of November, still plenty of time to see the show and pick up a painting, may I suggest you buy one for a loved one for Christmas.
Coming up right after my show is Sam Ferrara's yearly Christmas show and the opening reception for that is (I believe) on Thursday December 12th.
Bit of a down week here at the shoppe, I've been working on some writing and trying to do a drawing a day. I'll be back on with commissioned work starting tomorrow.
I've been trying to get my drawing style back up to snuff, it's been difficult and I may just do some watercolour with line work instead of using drafting markers, but expect some drawings to be showing up here, nothing that I want to sell, just exercises that keep me thinking about line weight etc.
I should be down at the Cameron tomorrow from 4-6pm or so if you want some company.
