Sketchbook Splurge and Mandarin Orange Crate Crafts

The top photo is me getting just a little bit nuts and going on a sketchbook binge, I had been told by a clerk that the Cachet, 8.5x11 landscape sketchbook may be discontinued so I went all over Toronto to find the last of them and snatch up as many as my budget allowed. When I finally found a store that had them (Thank you Toose!) I was told that the series is still available to order and the information I was given was incorrect. I still bought four of the buggers. I love the style, I love the landscape format even though its just taking a regular 8.5x11 and binding it on the side. I love the way they open and I love that they could at least TWICE what a normal 8.5x11 costs, so I bought four, that should tide me over until the spring.
I also picked up the last 7x7 (top of pile) that they had at Above Ground just because it's a really cool size, yes I am easily impressed when it comes to sketchbooks, they also had a great deal on three packs of  6x9 (I think) sized landscape style so I bought a three pack of those. Looks like we're set, no excuse to not do any drawing now.
The photo below is of a mandarin orange crate that I converted into a Troop Carrier while I was sitting around sick in front of the TV about a week ago. You can see how it was built over at the Any How Town blog (see links).
It's not too late to  head to the Press Club and pick up a painting for a Christmas Gift, you can see what is there at the post below.
have a great holiday if you don't hear from me until after Christmas, thanks for your support in 2012

Press Club Holiday Edition! Tabletop art!

Hanging at the Press Club, Dec. 11th

Top Left, Mr.Moon $80.00, Mariachi Ukelele $80.00, Baseball Furies $140.00, The Ballad of the Karate Kid $140.00, The Real Anchorwomen of St.Johns II $140.00, Bacon and Calm Dials $40.00 each, Raygun! $80.00, Prometheus $220.00, The Real Anchorwomen of St.Johns $140.00, Canadian Girl $140.00, Canadian Girl (Caesar) $140.00, Tribute to Maurice Sendak $140.00.

The Press Club is located at 850 Dundas West and you can purchase work from the staff, no Shay is necessary, they open at around 6pm.
Also included here are two shots of the tables in the front room and the very cool carving and scratching that is slowly turning them into their own unique art pieces, I'm almost sure that I'm going to reshoot the first table top and frame it, click on it if you don't think it's cool, one click will change your mind.
I'd also like to mention that if you go to the Press Club you can also see Jack Breakfast's excellent photos of birds, they are framed and wonderfully priced for Christmas, you should really check them out.
I cannot believe that I still have any of the work that is posted in the photo at the top of this blog entry, each and every one of those paintings deserves to be in a good home. It's crazy that they haven't sold yet.
alright, I've got some work to do, have a great day

Last Day at the Cameron House, Buy Local post

Well the festive season is upon us and here I am without any Mandarin Oranges so please head on down to the Cameron House today (opens at 5pm) and have a look at the show, I'm sure there is something there that reminds you of someone you love. It's perfectly alright to purchase (cash only) from the bar staff and take the painting or paintings home with you. Paintings are priced between $140.00-$500.00.\

As an added bonus for you the Cameron House also sells alcohol, they also supply live music which will be played by the professor himself Kevin Quain and his very helpful backing support The Mad Bastards. He will soon be ending his eighteen year residency at the Cameron so you'd better see him before this  unique show vanishes into the mists of Queen West Legend and Lore, I'm also completely sick of the history of Queen West Legend and Lore and never want to hear about it again- so go see Kevin Quain in the present, you'll enjoy it far more. I would also reccomend on this Christmas excursion, purchasing Whitney Rose's first CD and also Tarantuela's first album both available at the Cameron House for $15.00 each.

If you're at all curious about the Mandarin Orange crate head over to my other blog Any How Town (see links) and see what I did with this crate whilst lying sick in bed, with my dog at my feet watching Harper's Island on netflix.
that's about enough of me,

The Cameron House, Saturday (that's tomorrow)

I've been wanting both of these both for a number of years, maybe a decade, but the Beguiling always only had one copy and it was a hot seller. I got them both in softcover on Amazon for just over $30.00 which is incredible.
Tomorrow is my reception at the Cameron House for "popular/mechanics" the festivities start off at around 4pm, there will be some food supplied by Chef David Friedman and Red Fish Restaurant and at 6pm Colonel Tom and the American Pour will take the stage in the front room.
If you're looking for something to do before that Colonel Tom will be calling Bingo and spinning 78's (I think) at the Bluegrass Bingo at the Dakota Tavern. If you need something to do tonight or tomorrow Zeppelinesque play the back room of the Cameron House both nights. They are an incredible Led Zeppelin cover band, if you haven't seen them yet. Check them out, it just rocks.

A.Shay Hahn mighty painter (and slave to sales)

If  you haven't joined the Deserre's Creative Club yet, you are seriously behind folks, you get points on the dollar and they occasionally send out TWENTY FIVE PERCENT OFF ONE DAY ONLYcoupons to your email. I could hardly wait to get back from walking the dog to head up there this morning.
I've been wanting to work on some larger pieces and also see how we do in the house working with oil paints. What you see above is approx. $240.00 in art supplies (that is a stack of SIX 30x40 canvases) and I saved $55.00 - should I repeat that? I don't think I will, so join the Creative Club, you can probably do it online sitting in robe.
"popular/mechanics" is receiving raves from both customers and bands alike, nothing like making people happy, I love to show at the Cameron House, it's my favourite venue to display my work. Where else can I meet folks, talk about art and see great bands? Where else, you tell me and I'll go there too.
The reception is Saturday, November 24th from 4-7pm with music by Colonel Tom and the American Pour and some of our food will be supplied by Red Fish Restaurant. Work has been selling steadily already and the show will change again this Thursday so please have a scroll around on the blog to see what is available.
You can email me to make an appointment or you can buy (cash only) directly from the bar staff.
The show is up until the end of the month, prices range from $140.00 - $500.00 so buy local and get those Christmas gifts locked up.
Tt's a beautiful day, talk soon

Fire on Queen Street

As you've probably heard by now there was a fire in the early morning in one of the apartments above Jakob's hardware, the Cameron's closest neighbour. We're happy to hear that the Cameron House is safe, why not go by today for a beer and let them know how glad you are that everyone is okay.
The Rucksack Willies are playing at six pm and David Baxter is on at ten pm.
Our thoughts are with the person injured in the fire, let's wish them a speedy recovery.

A.Shay Hahn Toronto's Most Loved Painter Of Things

The Fire Watcther
18x18inches,acyrlic on canvas,framed
UPDATE SOLD.
at the Cameron House, Reception 4-7pm, Sat. November 24th.
I've had this piece for awhile, what's so interesting to me about it is if I had to point at a painting of mine that indicates where my work is headed next this is the one. The painting is over two years old, singular, not part of a series of any kind but I know with my instincts that this is the next direction my work will be taking over the upcoming year.

if you want to buy work from the Cameron and I'm not around it's fine to pay the staff, ATM on site.

You can read my descriptions of each at the Any How Town blog (see sidebar links), I was going to do about 100 of them and have a dedicated show but my plans have recently changed to finishing the first two books in the Any How Town series (see link) and that's really where my head needs to be.

The Last Charge of The One Man Band

Last Charge of the One Man Band
20x20inches,acrylic on canvas
SOLD.
for the show "popular/mechanics" at the Cameron house in November.
Show goes up Oct. 30th, Reception Nov. 17th (new date!) — at The Cameron House.

This piece actually began as a bit of poetry/song liyric that I was writing in the car on the way to Ottawa -
"There he goes, the one man band, the loneliest man I know, blowin' a horn and banging the drum and shouting, I'm the loneliest man I know. No don't pity him, oh no don't you pity him. The last man standing was the one man band."  I know alot of musicians, I've seen alot of solo acoustic perfomers - I figure that's how this wormed it's way into my head. It may have even been a plan to do a piece like this for "Silver" (see sidebar labels) and I never got around to it. Regardless, here he is.
Also the Reception for the show is Saturday the 24th of November, 4-7pm at the Cameron House

There's a whole bunch of great music coming up at the Cameron House and you'd be a fool to miss it, Devin Cuddy (seen above today on Breakfast Television is having two shows for his CD release. The Rattlesnake Choir are releasing their vinyl "Walking On A Wire" and Whitney Rose has her CD release coming up, all the dates and times can be found here at the Cameron House Records Link
there are videos to watch and you can also order your own "Cameron House Records" Tshirt as seen on the drummer in the above pic and designed by yours truly.
Also Tony Benattar's (of Rattlesnake Choir and The Cameron Family Singers) has his annual "Pop Goes the Cowboy" boot show (with paintings by Ed Adler) up right now until the 29th of October and here's a link to check out his incredible boots and Ed's paintings, I myself have a pair of Killaz and they are the boss.
In a slight change of plan I will be hanging my show of paintings "popular/mechanics" at the Cameron House on the 30th of October so if you want to get the worm show up at 4pm to see the show before the work starts selling.

and the drums, the drums, the drums

The Drum Corps
20x20inches,acrylic on canvas
$500.00
We haven't seen these ladies in over three years probably, unless of course you've been to the Garrison where the last painting that I did featuring the drum corps is hanging. I can't remember what it's called, man that was a long time and many paintings ago.
They're back and looking fine, I may do a touch up here and there on the drums but I'm pretty happy with the piece now, it went through many, many tone changes over the past couple of weeks.
As always you can see my work at the Wilson 96 (615 College Str. pop in after you go see something at the Royal) or at the Press Club (850 Dundas West) or at Red Fish Restaurant on College.
Coming up next month The Cameron House!

Bicycle #4, the Wilson 96 this eve

Bicycle #4
20x20inches, acrylic on canvas
$500.00
Detail from Bicycle #4
It's Friday and I've taken the day off from the studio to rake leaves, tidy the house and studio, continue the ongoing project of acclimating my dog to the nail trimming Dremel tool (this will take weeks) and other "around the house" kind of tasks. This evening you can find me having a couple of glasses of fine beer at the Wilson 96 on College I'll be there from 7:30-9ish if you'd like to see the work hanging there (just scoll down on the blog to check out what is up on the walls).
I've also been doing alot of building and posting tutorials over at the Any How Town blogsite (see side bar) and I think I've finally committed to building a large scale diorama. There's alot of stuff in the studio just waiting to be put to use and I think November will be the time to do it, barring how many Christmas commissions I will get. I'm going to first figure out how large the box should be for the diorama and then build it next week, this will be a pretty intensive project and I'm really looking forward to it.
alright, have a good one, I've got a dining room table to clear.

Water Tower I (Sleeping Robot)

Water Tower I
20x24inches,acrylic on canvas
$500.00
I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend with friends and family, I was in Ottawa having an incredible experience in Nature, feeding deer, watching Wild Turkeys from twenty feet away, watched THREE Blue Jays feeding at the same time, heading out for walks in the woods, it was fantastic.
Yes, of course I took pictures of the turning leaves, don't be silly, it was very inspiring.
The next three posts or so will be of Water Towers, feels good to be painting them again.
Short post today, the closer we get to hanging the show at the Cameron House (23 days) the less I have to say, there's just so much to do.
cheers,
