Small Towns Commission

Here are two works in progress and a photo of my studio assistant being no help at all. He likes to sit right under my chair while I'm working. If you'd like to see a bunch of shots of the work as it progresses just go to my page on facebook Andrew Shay Hahn (The mad craft shoppe) there are all kinds of process shots to click through. Or follow the label (see right side of blog) and you can see Small Towns that I've done in the past - and yes they can be commissioned.
If you're in Toronto, stay cool folks, stuff your shirt with Freezees.

The Blue Moods of Small Towns

Small Town (blue)
24x24inches,acrylic on canvas
$400.00
It's been over two years, maybe three, since I've done a "Small Town" (see label) this is the last remaining of the first six or seven that I did and tonally I think it's outstanding, the heavy medium giving a feeling that the village is built on ice or is a series of fishing huts.
Really love this one, I would've painted over it long ago if I didn't

Small Towns/ The Gulliver Project

Blue Roof I, 16 x 20 inches, Slate Roof I, 12 x 24 inches, Red Roof I, 18 x 18 inches
all paintings are acrylic on canvas
$300.00 each

I'd started these small towns almost a year ago, there were two of each colour, conceived as pairs. As the months went on they remained unfinished here in the studio.

While I was going over some old sketches I came across notes and drawings of figures sleeping amongst the houses, I'd completely forgotten the notes, maybe that's why I hadn't shown them. I do love the Small Towns on their own and had wanted to continue playing with them to see what direction they could go in - to add something new to the image. I suppose at the time I'd started working on the series, "the Woman Who Slept" a series of four paintings of a woman sleeping in a row boat, this was the next extension. I'm working on one more and we'll see what the response is, I'm still tweaking the light on some of the above pieces, but they won't look radically different from their current state.

These are an incredible amount of work, no scenic artist tricks, every mark hand applied and every colour hand mixed, nothing from straight out the tube.

Small Towns, Ice and Blue

Small Town, blue roof
24 x 24 inches, acrylic on canvas
$400.00
from the series, "Small Towns"

The icy texture of the ground really appeals to me, it informed the more "rough" looking treatment that I gave the piece as opposed to the more "clean" appeal of the others in the series. These remind me more of roughly built ice fishing huts. I also like the unfinished house that is just the rough-in.

Populate your Small Town

I'm a dog person myself but a nice orange cat can bring a touch of warmth to any small town.
New Feature Song Stuck In my Head "My Friends " by The Red Hot Chili Peppers, I can't stand this song, I think it was playing at lockbuster today when I purchased a copy of "Munich" a movie about the Hulk and James Bond killing Palestinians , which is an odd premise for a film.

How to build a Small Town

Still as popular as ever I thought I'd show you how I make a small town.
