Large Scale Diorama Builds

I've been working pretty steadily on two new builds, one is inspired by the Hitchcock film "Life Boat" and the other by Charlie Chaplin's "Modern Times" and you can read all about them over at the Any How Town blog (see sidebar).
I spend a lot of time watching movies as I build, there's plenty of great ideas that come my way when doing this, the prison set of "the Green Mile" is of particular interest to me and I'm thinking that may be the next one that I begin. Once the "sets" are built the plan is to stage several series of photographs in them for eventual sale as prints.
My constant companion with me during this process is my loyal studio assistant pictured above.
During this time I'll still be taking orders for commissions but I also encourage you to have a look around the blog to see work that is for sale either directly from me or available at the Press Club (850 Dundas West Toronto).
enjoy that wicked wind,

Corin Raymond's "Paper Nickels"

You may have heard about singer/songwriter Corin Raymond's great "Canadian Tire" caper, I created a few Canadian Tire Money dioramas for the fundraising drive and they have been printed in the coffee table CD booklet.
If you haven't heard about the caper read all about it and find concert dates at the link below.

Corin had asked for me to make prints of the interior artwork to sell at the shows but there just wasn't time to get some of the dioramas staged again and shot well, well enough to sell.
I've been working on these diorama pieces for the past three or four years, you can read all about them at the Any How Town blog (see links, sidebar) and it's gotten to the point where the basement really is starting to fill up with buildings and cars made of popsicle sticks.
Folks on facebook and deviantart really love the builds I've been doing so I decided this weekend that maybe I'll take a break from painting for the next month and just stage some really great dioramas and shoot them for eventual sale as prints and maybe a calendar.
please send Corin your Canadian Tire cash and be part of something fun and uniquely Canadian.
cheers,
A.Shay Hahn

Farewell to Constant Companions II

It's been a frustrating few days here at the studio, just not performing at the level that I'm used to - a little dry for ideas, the will is there but the work ain't coming. I'm bailing on painting next week and finishing the final draft of the first book (see Any How Town blog) in the AHT series and getting back to the Agent game, maybe that's where my head should be.
The Jenneral and I have been supplementing our already semi healthy diet with a daily dose (about 12oz.) of fresh smashed juiced. We  bought a juicer after watching the doc "Hungry for Change" on Netflix (it may be on YouTube look it up) but the juicer and the coffee maker are competing for space and the juicer established his dominance today by knocking my coffee cup onto the ground.
I did have a nice breakthrough on Sunday in regards to the 30x40's that I have on the go and I've been doing some studies and sketches for those and I'll post them sometime soon.
I'll be hanging the Pin Up girls (three instead of the planned four) at the Press Club (850 Dundas West) tomorrow after 6pm come on by and pick one up and hear some bands.
Also congrats to Corin Raymond on the first night of the Paper Nickels CD release party at the Tranzac
that's all for today, wear your mits

A.Shay Hahn, Marvin the Martian pin up series

Martina the Martian
10x12inches,acrylic on canvas, framed
$160.00
the pin up series
Here's our third pin up that will be hanging at the Press Club this Thurs. (Jan.24th). It's an interesting form to get a hold of, I'm sure a bunch of them were painted in watercolour, oil or gouache so an  acrylic approach (or at least my method of application) is a bit more plodding.

There's an intereting combination of tight and loose in a lot of the work of these artists, crisp lines really do smash up against so free work in the interior skin tones.

Dia De Los Muertos, Pin Up Series

Dia de Los Muertos
10x12 inches, acrylic on canvas, framed
$160.00
at the Press Club this Thursday!
Most "Day of the Dead" inspired work that I see online is way too busy for my tastes, to many details clutter up the face, they're just busy and I don\t like busy.
So in response here's my version of a D.of the Dead pin up.

Pin Up Series #1 "Siren"

Siren
10x12inches,acrylic on canvas, framed
$160.00
This will be up at the Press Club next week along with the five other pin ups that I have on the go. I really like the form and have wanted to do my own for a while, just never got around to it. I need to take breaks from the 30x40 pieces that I'm working on and these are filling in the time nicely.

Hey folks! Happy 2013 sorry to have been away so long but it was time to get a new computer and we're just getting set up. Here's a photo of what's at the Press Club right now (850 Dundas West). I'm working on some large oils (30x40) right now and they are taking up most of my time, I'll post some progress shots in a couple of weeks, but things are going to be slow around the shop in 2013 and I recommend heading over to my other blog  Any How Town, (*see links) where there's going to be a whole bunch of new stuff coming your way.

all the best,
A.Shay Hahn
